The Ibrahim Danin Library houses over 20,000 volumes, mostly on religion and theology. An online catalogue provides access to the collection, which the Dewey Decimal System classifies. Filling cabinet drawers contain restricted access vertical files of Nigerian Baptist historical materials and items too thin or fragile for the open stacks. The Library subscribes to some periodicals, which are displayed alphabetically by title. The Library also maintains audio-visual materials such as videos and DVDs, equipment, and a classroom viewing room.
Readers have free access to circulation and reference materials shelved in open stacks. Circulating books may not leave but circulate within two weeks. To encourage the use of the Library facilities and explain policies and procedures, a brief library orientation is given to matriculating students, and a semester-long library and study skills course is taught during the first year of study.
Library Readership Policy
The Baptist Theological Seminary, Kaduna, is a private institution under the proprietorship of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. Library readership is restricted to faculty, staff, and students of the seminary, as well as ministers and staff of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. The Library is not a public reading room.
Limited outside readers may be admitted for short-term research projects. These persons must be bonafide researchers or students writing degree essays or N.C.E. papers. (No permission is granted for regular reading privileges). Students applying for short-term permission to use the Library must present identification and a letter from a department supervisor stating the research topic and paper to be written. If permission to use the Library is granted, the student will be issued a temporary pass indicating the period allowed. Only one seating space is allowed for each applicant. No accompanying persons will be admitted.
Upon arriving at the Library to read, the person should show the temporary Library pass to the worker on duty and sign the register. Outside readers are expected to abide by all Library regulations. Books must not be checked out from the Library with a temporary pass, and vertical file (V.F.F.) materials may not be used. Outside readers must demonstrate library skills and should not request assistance from Seminary students or library personnel. The Library has no reference department, so outside readers must work independently.
